Katarzyna Mirczak is a visual artist working with photography, sound, installation and artists’ books. Her practice explores the relationships between image, language and cultural memory. Many of her projects begin with visual archives and documentary materials, which she subjects to critical reinterpretation. Her series Special Signs was presented at York Art Gallery as part of the exhibition Flesh: Skin and Surface. Mirczak’s photographs were shown there in dialogue with works by Peter Paul Rubens, Edgar Degas, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Jenny Saville. She examines the material traces of history and violence, most notably in the series Tools of Crime. Sound-based and research-led projects form another important strand of her practice. Abysses, developed from polysomnographic recordings of the artist’s sleep, was translated by composer Rafał Zapała into a sound composition in which biological data became musical structure. Mirczak is also the author of the artists’ books Ether, Pause for Light, created with Wojciech Nowicki, and Words. She was represented by Eric Franck Fine Art in London, and her work has been presented at international art fairs including The Photography Show presented by AIPAD, Paris Photo and Vienna Contemporary.
